Club Meeting and Program: Knots with Gary Bard, the 'knotty guy'.

  • Tuesday, October 23, 2018
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Marin County Office/Education 1111 Las Gallinas, Terra Linda

Gary Bard is the 'knotty guy'.  Knots fly fishers should know, and how to rig them.

Gary Bard lives in Alameda and for 28 years was the deputy fire chief for the city of Berkeley.  After retiring in 1998, Gary has worked for outdoors firms and as an avalanche training instructor for clients like the Marine Corps.  He has volunteered for many outdoor rescue teams and is on the board of Grizzly Peak Flyfishers. Here is what he has to say about his avocation as an expert on knots.

Why I love knots

At about age 12 my father was the chief In charge of recruit training at Coast Guard Island.

One evening he came home very upset that the recruits could “hardly tie their shoes”

One week later he came home with a Knot Board with about 30 knots.

He explained that I had six months to learn them all and there would be tests every few weeks.

I got into  the knots and it was and still is FUN.
